Current Event
Basic Format
Have the MLA citation for the article beginning on the top line of the notebook paper. (This can also be typed)
MLA style for newspaper articles:
Author’s Last name, First name. “Title of the article.” Title of the Newspaper Day Month Year of the article: Section and page number or online.
Articles:
The event must be noteworthy. No local arrests or wrecks qualify as current events. Your event must be something that has historical significance or has an impact that is noteworthy.Two of the four must be from countries other than the United States. Your sources must be respectable ones, like US News and World Report, Time, Newsweek, CNN.com, usnews.com.
Summary:
This should not include first or second person. It needs to address the basic questions of who, what, when, where, why, how, and any other important facts found in the article. One of the sentences needs to be a quote from the article with parenthetical documentation. The entire summary should be a minimum of 8 sentences.
The format for a quote is:
“The quote is written word for word from the article” (Author’s last name).
Analysis:
This should be in first person. Here you tell what you liked or disliked about the article, why you chose it, and who you think is affected by the event. This section should also be a minimum of eight sentences.
Map:
You should include on 81/2 x 11 white paper a hand-drawn map of the country that the article discusses. On that map mark the specific location (state, province, river…) of the event.
The current event folder should have four newspaper articles, the attached write-ups and maps, and it should be a standard three-prong folder.
