Holley Lagrone
I earned my undergraduate degree in English from Lander College, where I worked as a tutor in the Lander College Writing Lab, served as an intern for an American Literature class, which included organizing and teaching supplementary classes related to the course, and edited the literary magazine, The (Lander) Review, which won several awards, including Best Collegiate Magazine in South Carolina. From the University of South Carolina I received a Masters of Arts in English, with an emphasis in American Literature. Once I completed my graduate course work, I began teaching, both at the secondary and collegiate level. At The College of Charleston, I received an award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching as an Adjunct Instructor. Having taught for over 25 years, I still remember with fondness a student who said, “ Let’s just don’t do nothing today.” A great introduction to double negatives!
Why do I want to teach at CA? The students here make coming to work something I look forward to. Classroom discussions and out-of-class conversations make me realize how lucky I am to be a part of the Cambridge family. Students are respectful to each other and to faculty, staff and other adults, helpful both with schoolwork and with menial tasks, and mannerly, holding doors, saying “Excuse me,” “Please,” and “Hello. How was your weekend?” As a CA teacher, I have found it refreshing to have students who can learn while being themselves, who are willing to spend lunch and after school time to improve their work, and who measure progress not by a standard set by others but by a standard set by a desire to develop their potential and that encourages individuality and curiosity, tolerance and creativity, teamwork and analysis.
As a Cambridge graduate, I welcomed the opportunity to return to such an energetic atmosphere of learning.
